Here’s The Story Behind That Blonde Michael Myers Mask From “Halloween 4”

Halloween 4 was released theatrically around the time I was old enough to comprehend that a NEW Halloween film with Michael Myers was within my grasp. Being as how yours truly was 6-years-old at the time, apparently the maternal parental unit didn’t think it was a great idea to take me to the theater for the long-awaited return of The Shape. With the unfortunate flop of Season of the Witch, fans bitched and whined enough to bring back their pale-faced Haddonfield homicidal maniac. Now, again I was six, and none of that shit ran through my head as I had only seen the prior films with my Dad-the biggest Halloween fan in the universe. And I didn’t give two shits about any of that fanboy/girl bullshit. I just really wanted to see this film! Alas, pretty sure the mother didn’t want to deal with the dirty looks from theater patrons and opted for Oliver and Company instead.

BULLSHIT. K, it was an ok movie but it was lacking some serious George P. Wilbur malarkey.

Anyway, I got my fix a few months after the release at a birthday sleepover. My older, and very snotty cousin was turning eleven. Myself, being only six, stuck out and clearly didn’t belong there with the pre-teen crowd. However, because of family politics, she was forced to invite me. Which was fine with me because I was hanging out with the big girls! Upon my arrival, my uncle pulled me to the side and had stated he stopped at the video store for some late-night entertainment for us girls. He pulls out A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and: TADA! Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers; stating that he had heard I was really wanting to see this and got it JUST FOR ME!

And I’ve watched it about 600 times since.

Now, let’s get down to business. If you’ve seen Halloween 4 as many times I have, you know of what I speak when it comes to the scene that sticks out like a sore thumb. Ahh yes, the blonde-haired Michael Myers in the schoolhouse that it seemed everyone in the audiences caught immediately yet somehow got past the cast, crew, and everyone in the editing studio. However, just in case you need a refresher, here’s the clip in question:

If you ever wondered what in the bleach-blonde fuck that was about, you’re definitely not alone and have the mystery solved for you. Several stories have made the rounds giving an explanation for the California fun-in- the-sun Myers, however, the one that rings the most truth is that it was simply a mistake from the crew and budget restraints didn’t allow for a reshoot. According to the January 88′ issue of Gorezone magazine and then confirmed via Michael-Myers.net, Don Post Studios was commissioned to make a slew of Myers’ masks for the movie. I’m guessing the people in charge had never seen a Halloween film, which actually sounds really irresponsible if that were the case, because the studios had sent the film a set of “pink masks with white hair”?!

Anywho, the make-up coordinators paint over this pink monstrosity with white paint, (which explains the really PALE version this time around) and the hair brown to get the desired look. In regard to the school-scene, what you’re seeing is the ACTUAL unconverted mask. Why it was just sitting around on set, and no one had noticed that, “hey, this doesn’t look right“, might be the biggest mystery here.

But that, boils and ghouls, is pretty much the sum of it. Just a blunder from the production crew and restricted shoot guidelines. Even so, it still serves as a fun, little laughable moment in what is a truly great sequel in the franchise.

  1. In Halloween 2 there’s a blonde Myers mask, with a white face being worn by a 13 year old “Trick or Treater” that gets brutally killed while crossing the street! He gets crushed between 2 cars that collide. Not sure how that blonde mask works in the fictional Halloween universe. Also, Halloween 2 takes place, later, in the same night, as the first movie.

How often does that happen? A whole movie, AND it’s whole sequel, taking place, in the same 24 hr. period? It picks up, right where the first one, left off. Right after Michael is shot by Loomis, & does his “funky dance”, before falling off the balcony onto the front lawn. Then his body disappears. Then Laurie Strode goes to the hospital & Michael continues to stalk her, there, all night! Which I like. It’s got a great “Haunted House” feel to it. Then we get to meet a great new cast of character’s like Mr.s Alves & Haddonfield’s resident, pervert, paramedic, ambulance driver “Bud” played by acclaimed actor, Leo Rossi from (The Accused) starring Jody Foster. Leo plays a great Jerk! Also, check him out, in a movie called (Fast Getaway) from around 1990, where, he plays Cory Haim’s Dad & they rob banks together. It’s GREAT! It used to run on HBO & or, cable a lot. A female kickboxing champion called Cynthia Rothrock plays Leo’s girlfriend. She kicks his ass, & wears the pants in their relationship! Anyway back to H-2. Leo is in one of the most hilarious scenes in horror movie history in H2. In this seen you get to see some classic R rated nudity & boobs as Leo sits in a therapeutic HOT TUB late night with one of the nurses. Michael finds the control knob, & turns up the heat! Here’s the hilarious part! If you look closely you can see, the heat control knob labeled “SCALDING”!!! At It’s hottest setting!!! Why would any therapeutic HOT TUB manufacturer make a tub that can get hot enough to scald you! They would be sued out of business immediately especially in California!!! But, in Haddonfield, maybe they “look the other way”. Also, the manufacturer of the tub, DID, put a WARNING label on it! Then, when it’s hot enough, to scald, Myers holds the nurse’s head under the boiling hot water with his bare hand! When he pulls her head out, of the scalding HOT water, her face, is covered in blisters, but Michael’s bare hand has none!

  2. I saw HALLOWEEN III (Season of the Witch) FIRST!!! When I was 9, because it was on cable in 1983. H3 scared the crap out of me! I’ve liked it, ever since! I think it’s a good “Stand Alone” horror movie. But they couldn’t get enough funding without attaching the HALLOWEEN brand name to it! For those of you who don’t know. The director, & creator John Carpenter’s original intention was to release a movie every Halloween called Halloween about something happening on Halloween. Like the first one, probably would’ve been HALLOWEEN (The Baby Sitter Murders) but then it became the most profitable movie of all time because it was made with such a low budget. So he had to bring back Michael Myers for H2. Then for H3 he tried to go back to his original idea of making a movie about something happening on Halloween called Halloween. But NOPE, the fans wouldn’t accept it! Well, like I said. I saw H3 FIRST! Without any expectations! I never even heard of Michael Myers yet. So I saw H3 with fresh eyes & no expectations. Like John Carpenter intended. (I know,) I don’t think he even directed or had anything to do with H3. Anyway, it worked for me! Years later, I was meeting up with my Aunt, Uncle, & cousins at their house, out in the country. They didn’t have to lock their doors. Their garage door was always open with the light on inside. They have a 100ft. Long driveway from the road. I arrived at their house before they got home from somewhere. I don’t remember where they were, but I knew they weren’t gonna be home for a couple hours. It was already after dark probably winter time. When I walked into their dark house, I turned on the kitchen light. Sitting on their kitchen table was a brand new VHS copy of the original HALLOWEEN. This was sometime in the 1990’s when they started cranking out $5.00 copies of movies like this & you could get them at the Walmart check stand. Anyway I had never seen the original & loved this stuff. So I put it in the VCR, Turned off all the lights & watched it alone, in the dark in a country house with unlocked doors. Before cell phones. I watched the movie all the way through before anyone arrived home. Perfect conditions to scare me. It failed. It didn’t scare me at all. I thought it was lame & Michael Myers was a puss! Why does he want to kill his half Sister Laurie Strode? I still don’t know. I don’t get it! I am a fan of Kane Hodder’s Jason! When I saw Rob Zombie’s version of the adult Michael Myers a gained new respect for the character because now he is big & strong like Jason with super human strength.
