Godzilla vs Gamera: A Secret War For The Planet!

When it comes to Kaiju cinema, two names have been battling it out from the very beginning of time. Two massive forces that could essentially end all life on the planet should either of them ever get the gumption to do so. Of course, I’m talking about Godzilla and Gamera, two juggernauts who have fought a silent war across the world for the admiration, awe, and adoration of fans all around.

These two colossus beings have (sadly) never crossed paths to fight it out in a movie. Still, the question fans have always asked is who would win if Godzilla and Gamera ever came face to face in a world-ending battle that would not only determine the future of our pitiful little species but would alter the destiny of the entire cosmos.

If you’ve not seen as many Kaiju films as I have, and unless you’re an ultra-nerd uber-dork like yours truly here, you may not fully realize the god-like powers Godzilla holds within himself. In Shin Godzilla, that terrifying aspect of Godzilla’s might was momentarily explored in how Godzilla evolved from one stage of destruction to the next granting him new powers to crush and disseminate a path across all woefully in his way. He was utterly indestructible, and each level of evolution made him more than a conqueror of worlds.

This unique iteration of the King of the Monsters elevated his destructive powers to degrees never before witnessed. He is a terror born from toxic filth and radiation, a being of agony and in constant pain. A misery he brings to the world as punishment to mankind for how we’ve abused the planet by pouring toxic waste into the waters without a second thought to the consequences.

They could not defeat Shin Godzilla. They could only freeze him which means he’s still out there and should he thaw…well we’re fucked. The director’s opened up about the hidden power of Shin Godzilla, how he would’ve continued evolving into a stronger and better vessel of death and wrath. That evolution would have grown until his indominable might reached out into space, spread across the stars, and in a Lovecraftian display of nightmarish power taken over the galaxy entirely. In Godzilla Minus One we see a youthful Godzilla that’s pure might and fueled by relentless rage. His atomic breath causes a delayed atomic nuclear blast on par equal to the dreaded Bomb itself. Imagine that power given the chance to grow and fully mature. Imagine his reach as he destroys the whole of Japan only to set his sights on other countries.

What’s stopping him from branching out? That’s a fun and scary thought. GMO is a massive achievement for Kaiju cinema being that it’s the first Godzilla movie to win an Oscar and the film took the world by storm largely because it stuck to the original concept – Godzilla is the Monster of the Apocalypse. A man-made monster born of the atomic bomb and fed by nuclear power. The perfect beast to spell our doom.

Gamera would be our only savior. Gamera, the friend of children and the guardian of the galaxy. Gamera who isn’t afraid to sacrifice a limb to protect us from sensational dangers such as Godzilla.

If they ever got the rights worked out these two fighting in a movie would be out of control! Forget Godzilla vs King Kong. Put the monkey to rest and bring in the giant Atlantean Turtle! It would be an onslaught of might and power, an atomic glowing display of brute force as all the dangers of nature slammed fists against cosmic divinity.

We need this movie to happen. We need the two studios to give each other a big hug and work things out so fans can watch this awesome battle of the ages take place. I would hope that by the end of their personal war, the world would stand on the brink of doom. A desolate hellscape of smoldering cities, cratered nations, and seas boiling from the aftershock. If I was a billionaire, this is what I’d be using my money to make happen.

Whereas fans never have seen the battle of these two gods take place (yet) there’s always been a cold war between Godzilla and Gamera. A war between their movie franchises. So impactful has this conflict been that it’s altered both of their destinies and forced the two monsters to undergo unique evolution over the last 70 or so years. In 1954 audiences shrank back in horror as a new breed of monster stormed its way onto the screen.

Gojira! Walking out of the shadows of King Kong, Godzilla soon became a titan in his own right and began a whole new breed of cinematic monsters. These monsters were giants and world killers. King Kong may have inspired the concept but Godzilla is his own beast. A killer born into the atomic age against his will. An unfit child for a world that foolishly ushered him into existence. It was a hit, and soon rival studios saw only potential in the idea.

In 1965 Deisei Film Studios brought the world an answer to Toho’s monstrous success with Gamera, a giant turtle. At first, Gamera is presented as another monster of destruction but Deisei realized they needed a new angle to their beast if they wanted him to survive Godzilla’s fame. So they let their giant monster appeal to a younger audience and so Gamera became the gentle and fun-loving friend to children.

A monster kids (whose families literally survived an atomic blast) could look up to and not be scared of. The idea was a goldmine! Not only could kids at the time dance around the Gamera movies but once they grew up, they introduced their own kids to the loving protective turtle of their childhood.

Gamera was an unexpected success even with all its zany camp and fun. The zany camp and fun are what made Gamera such a treasure. Toho stood back and watched the results and decided their giant monster needed a bit of a redo. Fans of the Showa era Godzilla films are very familiar with a HUGE tonal shift in the movies. We go from Gojira, a beast to be terrified of, to a silly romp of Megalon ass-kicking alongside Jet Jaguar.

You can clearly see which movies Gamera affected in Godzilla’s history. The fun campiness of many of Showa’s movies is what kept Godzilla a cultural mainstay in many people’s minds and it’s all thanks to a fire-breathing turtle. Still the two beasts fought it out over box office results as well as the hearts of fans near and far.

The Heisei Era


This is when the heat ramped up for both monsters. The Showa Era was ended for both. Toho gave fans a huge monster slugfest on Monster Island (and a couple more movies to follow) as a grand send-off for the legendary monster of monsters. Godzilla was done and it didn’t seem like he’d be back…until he did return. In 1984 Toho released The Return of Godzilla and took things back to their horror roots. They said forget all that Jet Jaguar and Son of Godzilla stuff. Godzilla was once scary so let’s make him scary again.

The whole movie is blanketed with a sense of overwhelming dread. It doesn’t hurt that it was released during the heat of the Cold War and people were going to bed scared to death to wake up to the world burning all around them. The possibility of being nuked was at an all-time high and was the perfect setting for Godzilla’s triumphant return. The movie released in the West a year later as Godzilla 1985. I remember being four years old and seeing an ad on TV for this movie and I LOST MY SHIT! A NEW Godzilla movie?!?!? I couldn’t contain myself. Everyone was talking about it.

This movie was a big fucking deal! Godzilla was back with updated effects and a brand-new look. He felt more indestructible than ever, and I couldn’t have been happier. I got the VHS for Christmas one year and it was a prized treasure in my collection. I’ve watched the movie to fucking death too. I mean I’ve had to replace the tape twice now.

Little be known to us Godzilla was raging over in Japan. The Heisei era was only just begun, and Toho was bringing back beloved monsters like Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah and fans were loving every minute of it. But, just as had happened with the Showa Era, Deisei Studio was paying attention, and if Godzilla could come back in such a massive way why couldn’t their Gamera?

Their war at the box office was rekindled and holy dog shit on toast it was wild! Let me make something very clear. I love Godzilla. For the longest time, Heisei Godzilla’s design was my favorite look of the monster, it’s since been replaced by Minus One’s. But let it be known I’m going to fanboy for Godzilla no matter what…but those Gamera movies are no joke!

I mean they’re really, really good!

I’d never really watched a Gamera movie before if we’re honest. The first Gamera film I sat down to watch was from the Heisei trilogy, a trilogy I bought for $5 on Blu-ray and didn’t have high expectations for. I pretty much went in blind and came out a true believer! Removed now was all the silliness and Gamera was suddenly a force to be reckoned with and taken seriously.

In Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Japan is being attacked by these flying monsters called Gyaos, a classic beast Gamera battled way back in 1967. Gyaos are swooping in and eating people. One moment that stands out to me is when our heroes stumble upon a huge white pile of bird shit and it hit me. That’s people! The movie is pretty shocking in its unexpected brutality. It’s not Video Nasties level brutal but for a Kaiju film, it pushes the envelope. The Gyaos are a serious threat and so Gamera rises to answer Earth’s need for a protector.

As with Godzilla the Heisei Gamera films gave the monster suits a much-needed update and fill the movies with spectacular special effects like lots of explosions. Expect some great Kaiju battles and a lot of kaboomy action!

Guardian did so well that it inspired two sequels: Gamera 2: Attack of Legion which just makes it sound somehow biblical and fits into the apocalyptic tone for these movies.

Gamera 2 finds a special place in many fans hearts and for many it’s the best Gamera’s ever looked. The monster battles are that much more impressive as we see Gamera at times covered in swarming hordes of the Legion as he still fights for our survival against astronomical odds. In the first movie the Gamera suit looks…how do I say this respecfully? I guess soft. He looks good but you can tell the studio had a better budget and put it to good use making this sequel an even more exciting experience. But that only leads to my personal favorite of the trilogy!

Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris is not just my favorite of the Heisei trilogy here but it’s actually one of my top five favorite Kaiju movies of all time. The main antagonist, Iris, is just so fucking cool and steals the show right away. He starts off early on looking like a cute alien snail and you can’t help but love the little guy. He’s innocent enough and somewhat sweet. But then he grows into a mother-fucking god of destruction and only Gamera can save us!

If Ghidorah is the main antagonist to Godzilla, then I argue Iris is that to Gamera. Not to mention Iris is just so cool to look at. He also brings a heightened threat to Gamera that’s never been seen before. I suppose their conflict could be on par with the battle-heavy madness of Godzilla vs Destoroyah.

This is also my favorite look for the Gamera costume. Take a look.

I mean just look at this badass! You know I had to get this version of the character in my figure collection. They’ve fully let their monster mature and act like a tank. You can expect some great fights here between the two juggernauts.

These three films took Gamera out of the camp and gave them heart and fangs and made them mother-fucking metal as all Hell! The giant turtle was taken seriously, and the results were in. His movies were actually outselling Godzilla’s at the time. Gamera could bleed and take damage. In one moment of the series, he loses an arm in battle but doesn’t stop fighting. Gamera had a vulnerability to him that audiences found endearing. People cheered for Gamera and hated seeing him take a beating. Not to mention the trilogy had some top-notch Kaiju effects. Godzilla’s superior reign had been challenged and the two monsters fought it out to win the hearts of the fans all over again

Anyone who knows my writing here will know how much I love Godzilla. So it might come as a shock for you to know that when it comes to the Heisei Era of both franchises I actually prefer Gamera’s films over Godzilla’s. I know shocking right? That doesn’t mean the Heisei Godzilla movies are crappy or anything because holy hot damn are there some good ones during that era. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah alone! But by a very small margarin Gamera wins me over for the time period and also depending on my mood. The Gamera trilogy was a massive treat and took my totally by surprise by how great they are.

In both cases, the Heisei Era was good for both franchises, and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. The films of the era all just have a great look about them. The monster suits were all given a much-improved updated look….all except Mechgodzilla but that’s another issue entirely. But yes, Godzilla and Gamera were back and better than ever.

The Heisei movies were full of explosions, fire, chaos, and loads of face-melting destruction. Cities were smashed to the ground as giant monsters battled it out for supremacy. The era secured their place in pop-culture, reintroducing these monsters to a new generation of kids as well as pulling in fans who grew up watching the Showa films.

As result there was mass pandemonium in the streets and mobs of people ran their little feet off to go see these movies as they hit theaters…. only in fucking Japan! For some reason, we never got to see these movies for the longest time. I never got ahold of them until DVDs became a thing and I think I ended up collecting them all sometime around 2010. For one thing they weren’t easy to find and for another they were damn expensive whenever you could find one on the rare occasion!

Final Thoughts

Back when Shin Godzilla took the world by storm it was rumored Gamera was getting a new movie as well in light of his 50th Anniversary. Well, Deisei failed us and nothing happened. Since then, we’ve had a whole new Godzilla franchise take over with the Legendary films and Toho released yet another Godzilla movie with Minus One.

Now after Godzilla: Minus One, my absolute favorite Godzilla movie btw, there’s still room for Gamera to do what he’s always done and come in after Godzilla’s shadow. I would love to see Gamera have special effects on par with what Minus One showed us. There’s always a need for a giant flying fire-breathing turtle.

There’s also always room for a possible battle between the two monsters. Could we see it happen? I’m still holding out hope. Nevertheless, at the very least, we may still get to see the two fight it out at the box office if someone ever brings Gamera back. Will it be like Shin and Minus One and make its way over to a theater near me? I can only hope it will.

As of writing this Tubi’s uploaded the Heisei Gamera trilogy and the Heisei Godzilla movies. It’s a perfect time to relive the battle of the monsters. Or maybe even watch them for the first time. Lucky you if that’s the case because you’re in for a treat. So, crack open a beer and get yourself a pizza and indulge in the days of mass destruction in an age of giant fire-breathing monsters.

The only question now is who would come out the victor? Godzilla or Gamera? Fans have debated this heatedly. Me personally I think in this battle there would need to be a clear good guy and a definite bad guy. Let’s take Godzilla to his roots and say he’s the villain, a massive force of utter destruction hellbent on destroying us all. To answer the threat would be Gamera, but he’d be in the toughest fight of his entire life as he stood up against Godzilla.

Could Gamera beat Godzilla? It’s definitely possible but I think Gamera would crawl away from the fight in pieces. It would be a bittersweet victory. It’d be very interesting if Gamera had to fight Shin Godzilla. Oh, heck or even Minus One’s Godzilla. Also, would Gamera have our help like would we deploy Mechagodzilla to assist the Guardian of the Universe? That might be the only way Gamera could get a leg up on the fight. However, it happens it’s fun to think about so share your thoughts with us.

The Resurrection of Godzilla – ‘Godzilla 1985’ And Its Triumphant Impact!

In my humble lifetime, I’ve watched Godzilla rise from obscure campiness confined only to the most niche corners of geekdom to all-out and absolute imperial sovereignty. No longer is he restrained by critiques for bad dubbing nor is he looked down on for rubber suits or string-pulled modeled fighter jets. Nothing is wrong with any of those things; they still hold a marvelous charm and irresistible fun. However, and if we’re being honest, the G-fandom’s always-known Godzilla (and his compatriot Kaiju) always deserved to be much more respected.

It is undeniable that we are currently living in an era where the King of the Monsters, Godzilla, has transcended the skepticism and thoughtless critiques that once surrounded him, and has now become a source of awe, terror, and wonder for the masses. The recently released movie, Godzilla: Minus One, provides clear evidence of the undeniable presence and power Godzilla holds over us all.

Godzilla: Minus One

Not too long ago, being a fan of Godzilla came with a harsh stigma. I remember being made fun of at school for talking about the few Godzilla films I owned. At the time, Godzilla was exceedingly rare and people thought there was something wrong with you if you were a fan. That scarcity meant that many people weren’t aware of what they were missing out on, and it was easier to mock the thing rather than discover how amazing it could actually be. Even my art teacher in 2nd grade made fun of me for choosing to draw Godzilla as a project.

It was extremely difficult to find any Godzilla movie at a store during those dark days, so owning any of them was considered a big deal. K-Mart sometimes had one or two, but it was a matter of some fucking luck to find any. Once in a while, you could catch one on TV and record it. That’s how I got hold of Godzilla vs King Kong and Godzilla vs Megalon. But to own officially released movies? Get out of here. So imagine my surprise one fateful Christmas when Santa left me a shoebox under the tree filled with four (motherfucking FOUR) Godzilla movies! It made me feel rich beyond measure and gave me major bragging rights. We would borrow the movies around at school and with cousins and they were watched to ever-fucking death! My copy of Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla still holds up though.

How Things Have Changed

I went to FYE a few months ago and walked out with a Godzilla energy drink, a sexy as Hell Godzilla shirt (the very one I wore to see G:MO last night), and a Mothra chocolate bar. The store has dedicated an entire section to the King of the Monsters himself. They also had a Godzilla welcome mat I’m gonna have to get soon. 

Not to mention how NECA Toys released just about any version of Godzilla you can think of. There’s even a crazy NES version of the character you can now display proudly on your shelf. I wonder how many people even played that game. It, the game, was another Christmas present one year and despite the Angry Nerd’s verdict I remember always liking it.

That’s not to discredit S.H. Monsterarts and Super 7 who both are releasing amazingly detailed Godzilla figures of their own.

The Criterion Collection released the entire Showa Era on Blu-ray and even though the collection is in a binder that’s too goddamn fucking tall for its own good at least they’re available right? All this is to say Godzilla is every! He can be found at your local Target, Barnes & Noble, and mall. I mean come on, can find the cutest mother fucking plushies of Godzilla, Mothra, and Ghidorah.

Our cup runneth over, friends. My ten-year-old self would be losing his mind over this kind of shit. I mean seriously, Godzilla reigns! 

Godzilla: Minus One

Legendary’s big-budget film (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) brought us one epic showdown between Godzilla and Ghidorah, and I was absolutely blown away. As a kid, I always knew Godzilla movies had the potential to be big, bold, and larger than life, and this film delivered on all fronts. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

But that’s not all. A brand new Toho-produced (!!!) Godzilla movie opened this weekend. The studio that blessed us all with the Beast himself is back at doing what they’ve always done best. Word is it’s nominated for best picture too. A fact I’m not surprised by because I always knew these movies, if only done right, could reach this level of magnitude. After seeing the movie for myself I can’t stop thinking of the images given to me. It’s the best, the absolute best, Godzilla has ever been since the original film.

Godzilla’s gone above and beyond to solidify his titanic place in pop culture and is going nowhere. He’s here to stay.

Godzilla: Minus One

So despite Godzilla’s current popularity, it is hard to imagine that the franchise was once discontinued and thought to be dead. In 1975, Toho released what was meant to be the absolute final movie and then pulled the plug on the series with no indication of ever bringing the iconic monster back to the big screen. By popular opinion, Godzilla had run his course and was done.

At that time, Toho was competing with the Gamera films, which had gained massive popularity among younger audiences.

In response, Toho transformed Godzilla from a terrifying monster to a more child-friendly character. This new version of Godzilla was focused on teaching brats important values such as how to deal with bullies and the significance of recycling. Yeah, that’ll stick it to that flying turtle! Godzilla cleans up litter.

The character’s popularity was not decreasing, even though the campy and clownish tone of the story was becoming stale. The studio made the wise decision to take a break to allow their creative juices to flow again, as it seemed as if they had run out of ideas. This turned out to be the best decision Toho ever made, because what came next set the world on fire!

It seems like someone out there still remembered the original idea behind Godzilla. He was meant to be a symbol of man’s reckless misuse of atomic power, a force that could not be destroyed. He represented the dawn of a new era, an age defined by the eerie blue glow of atomic energy and all the terrifying consequences it brought with it. Godzilla was the ultimate monster of this brave new world, a horrific beast born from the ashes of human folly.

The Return of Godzilla (1984)

By God, it was time to bring Godzilla back and place him at the heart of the modern world’s current crises, that being the Cold War. The world stood breathlessly on the teetering brink of absolute annihilation as tensions mounted between the East and the West. The only thing anyone could think of at the time was The Bomb. How one small and insignificant mishap could spell the unconditional doom of all mankind. We stood in the shadow of the eleventh hour and many people were counting down the days till the inevitable happened. Possibly it was thanks to this apocalyptic atmosphere that helped restore Godzilla back to his terrifying roots. 

In 1985, Godzilla was resurrected and brought back to the big screen, smashing its way into cinemas and capturing people’s attention. For the first time in my lifetime, a Godzilla movie was released theatrically, and it was this event that truly put the franchise on the map.

In this installment, Godzilla was stripped of his campy and comedic nature. This marked the beginning of a new era of films, which is also my personal favorite, the Hessei Era. And Toho wasn’t fucking around with this one. Godzilla was no longer the friendly creature we last saw. As soon as he emerges from a remote island, he begins wreaking havoc and destruction, leaving a trail of chaos and death in his wake.

It goes without saying they chose a far darker tone that reflected the signs of the times. Viewers are first met with an emotionally charged and brooding score as the film opens setting up the whole feel for what’s awaiting us all. The atmosphere is heavy and threatening as the world of Godzilla 1985 appears to be locked in perpetual night. As far as Godzilla himself the iconic suit gets a massive upgrade in appearance. The big guy had never looked better, not since the original Gojira. As the first in a new saga 1985 got it right and right away too.

The movie, known as The Return of Godzilla in Japan, was released there a year before its Western release. It was considered a true sequel to the original movie, as Toho chose to disregard all the other movies that came after Gojira. A trend that’s no become common among movies released then on.

Godzilla immediately attacks a Soviet nuclear submarine, triggering a chain of events that further fuels the aggression of the Cold War. Ironically, it was the development of nuclear weapons that gave rise to Godzilla, yet these same weapons continue to be the primary means by which humanity seeks to destroy itself. Godzilla emerges from the earth like a mushroom cloud, laying waste to everything in its path. He is both the harbinger of the apocalypse and a symbol of Armageddon.

The movie explores the dilemma of whether to rely on nuclear weapons to destroy Godzilla or to keep them as far away as possible. The idea of using Godzilla’s own source of power against him is about as brilliant as punching yourself in the nuts to forget about your headache, but it puts the Japanese Prime Minister in a terrible predicament. Both the USA and the USSR urge him to use nuclear weapons to take down the monster, making his decision a difficult one. I”d hate to have his job the lousy fuck.

The film is far from perfect but it gets the job done. A common complaint is how it runs slow at times. I recently watched the original Japanese version of the film and, just like how the original Japanese release of Gojira is superior to the Western counterpart, this proved to be a much better experience. The Western version of 1985 has American scenes shoehorned in to (I guess) appeal to American moviegoers. These scenes add little to the plot and are jarring in terms of runtime. The original film, The Return of Godzilla, flows much better and doesn’t feel overly drawn out while it plays out the plot.

To Western fans, it might be nice to see Raymond Burr back reprising the role he had in Gojira. That’s a nice touch that adds some continuity to the story and makes it feel connected to the first movie. But I didn’t miss seeing his scenes when I watched the Japanese cut. It’s a matter of preference.

For the time this was my favorite Godzilla movie and remained so for a long, long time. I wasn’t aware Toho was making other Godzilla movies that followed the events of 1985. When Godzilla falls into the volcano at the end of the movie I cried. I was a little kid and Godzilla was my hero. He couldn’t die! And the end of the movie felt so final. Do I dare say it was operatic? I don’t know, but I know it played my emotions too well. 

Another change I noticed in the Japanese cut – they know Godzilla cannot be destroyed. They lure him to that volcano at the end in hopes of burying him deep, deep into the earth’s core where he will be far removed from the surface world. The idea didn’t work because like I said there were plenty of movies to follow it.

Looking back, it’s clear that Godzilla’s resurgence can be traced back to 1985. The movie was a huge success and paved the way for the popularity that Godzilla now enjoys. It’s hard to say if we would have gotten the Legendary films if it weren’t for 1985. Would Toho have taken the risk to invest in more Kaiju films if 1985 hadn’t worked?

Although not perfect, Godzilla 1985 is a powerful film that demonstrates the enduring appeal of the King of the Monsters. It had a significant influence on many children in my generation, who grew up with the knowledge that Godzilla could not be defeated. They knew that the King of the Monsters would always return, time and time again.

Now I’m going to go see Godzilla: Minus One as many times as I can! You all take care, happy holidays and…

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Review! The Monster Battle We’ve Waited For Is Finally Here!

This is the movie kaiju fans have been ravenously waiting to see! It’s been 7 years in the making, ever since Gareth Edwards brought the world a proper and faithful Western-made Godzilla film with a titanic budget backing it and cutting edge special effects befitting to the King of the Monsters.

Godzilla and King Kong, two of the most groundbreaking monster names in all cinematic history, have not met since the early ’60s. There was a lot of talk in the ’90s to bring these two colossuses back for a battle of the ages and I’m sad that never happened. I love the Heisei Godzilla films and seeing that Godzilla battle a revamped Kong would have been nothing short of extraordinary.

Well, after many decades, after many plans fell by the wayside, and once a new universe of monsters and mayhem had been established – courtesy of Legendary Pictures – the wait has come to an end at long last. The monster clash of the century has finally dawned and fans may rejoice in the neon haze.

If you’ve been following us here on Nightmare Nostalgia our readers will find it no surprise that I’m a Godzilla fanatic. I mean holy hell, people! If you search Godzilla there are at least 5 pages of Godzilla articles by me! So oh hells yeah, I’m excited about this movie. I’ve been looking forward to watching it for years!

First off I never thought it’d ever happen. Even while watching Godzilla back in 2014 I didn’t anticipate Legendary’s sensational vision to bring about a thriving MonsterVerse. One filled with classic Toho monsters and a fresh new evaluation of how these beasts would work in our world today.

Legendary’s treatment of these movies (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters) has been with the utmost respect for each creature and project. The filmmakers don’t treat these guys as great big monsters nor have they handled the projects as a ‘big dumb monster movie.’ Unlike the 1998 Godzilla atrocity.

Legendary treats these beasts reverently and as individual characters – and not just some CGI thing – and that’s what makes them work. What separates this series of monster films from many imitators is the fact that the monsters have so much heart and character, just like the original monster films Gojira and King Kong

Their latest monsterpiece, Godzilla vs. Kong, is no different. And this was not an easy project to bring to life either. Anticipations were high as fans of both beasts wanted to see their Titan done properly. This would have been a movie that easily could have monumentally fucked up – and fuck up hard – had it been handled in lesser experienced hands. I trusted Legendary’s vision and they didn’t disappoint. As far as both monsters go that is.

Let’s get the most obvious fact out of the way. This is a remake, but it’s the kind of remake that works just like Carpenter’s The Thing and Cronenberg’s The Fly. King Kong vs. Godzilla was a fine achievement for Toho back in 1962.

It was the first time either Kong or Godzilla appeared in color for one thing, and it was the third outing for Godzilla (just like this new film come to think of it) and a completely new take on Kong’s mythos.

In KKVG King Kong was a juice-drinking bachelor living the good life and being worshipped by adoring fans. He kind of had it made…aside from having to kick the shit out of rowdy gigantic sea life every now and then.

Fun fact: this was not the first time Kong appeared in a Toho production. Sadly (as of this date) the original Toho Kong movies are lost to Time but, as has happened before, perhaps they’ll resurface someday. Anyways that’s a topic for another article.

That original movie also set the formula every other Toho Godzilla project would follow – that being Godzilla vs. (insert monster here). It’s a brilliant formula too and it’s enchanted generations of fans ever since. Because of this movie’s success, it led Toho to quickly follow up with fan-favorite Godzilla vs. Mothra. And the rest is cinematic history!

So being a remake, Godzilla vs. Kong pays faithful tribute to the original (and much adored) Toho classic– and all of us fans are given some pretty nostalgic Easter eggs – while forging a modern classic out of the heat of Godzilla’s flames themselves.

This is a must-watch – I can’t stress that enough – for monster fans and whether you find yourself favoring Kong or if you’re more of a Godzilla nut there is plenty enough in this film to appease and delight fans on both sides.

Godzilla is shown in all of his raging glory and fans have not long to wait before seeing our Monster King. When he arrives all Hell breaks loose as he obliterates an Apex facility at Pensacola, FA. People flee (helplessly) in terror as he blasts away towers, buildings, and streets nearby. The very air sizzles in the tormenting heat of his inner radiation.

Flesh, blood, and bone melt by the heat of his atomic flames! Something, to be frank, I was expecting to see back in 2014. I was expecting to see the destruction of which Godzilla is very well known for. Godzilla is pure energy, a child of the Apocalypse, born of nuclear terror and he who walks with destruction in his stride. In Legendary he is an ancient Titan come from primordial mystery and awe, so it was nice to see him blast things apart just like he did in the good-old days. Naturally it also plays into the film’s narrative.

We are given a glimpse of the terror and awe that was revealed back in Gojira. I just wish there could have been a little more.

Kong is our lead though, a powerhouse of brute strength but with sympathy. I swear I keep seeing that beautiful Willis O’Brian touch (from the very original King Kong film) here in Legendary’s Kong. It’s in his eyes and how expressive they are. There is a profound soul behind his gaze and even a crazed G-Fan like myself can’t help but fall in love with Big Monkey.

Without getting into spoiler territory (yet) I’ll say this really is a Kong adventure-story where we follow him on his quest to kingship. Godzilla is not the villain though, which I theorized earlier. We’ll cover that a bit later though.

The movie is brimming with fantasy and sci-fi adventure. It’s a visual masterpiece that awes its audience. It also (most importantly) gives us a massive slugfest as monster battles monster to the violent end. Enjoy the marvel of seeing two of the most famous monsters of all time beating each other to bits. And yes, the battles – notice I say ‘battles’ because we get a few – are mind blowing.

The rumors and theories were all true. The hidden villain of the film is none other than Mechagodzilla. I fucking knew it.

Mechagodzilla bursts onto the scene, tearing his wear out of the heart of a mountain, very similar to one of his earliest introductions from Toho, and as he’s born a wave of mayhem ensues. He is the new era of Titans, a new god, brought to life by none other than pure mad science! Don’t you love that? Classic sci-fi stuff right there.

They hint at him from the beginning of the film as we delve into the malicious secrets of Apex and learn of the company’s true intent.

Science may have built the chrome design of this mecha-nightmare, but the soul of the creature, and yes, at least in this particular case, the machine has a soul, one that’s blighted and thrives on the agony of others, is the DNA harvested from Ghidorah’s skull (just as I predicted from seeing the first trailer).

And he is vicious! I was curious how exactly Mechagodzilla would perform in the movie – like would he be a bulky stiff machine or something? He quickly proves (right off the bat) to be more than Godzilla or Kong could handle on their own. There’s a serpentine way the creature moves, and he possesses surprising agility. He’s out to kill and it could be argued that he is the Second Coming of Ghidorah seeing as he shares the devil’s own DNA.

So we get the monster team-up fans have always wanted as both kings join forces to take down the terror of Mechagodzilla. As people have been posting on social media (and spoiling the movie left and right) it’s true: Godzilla wins the fight with Kong but Kong ultimately kills Mechagodzilla.

But Kong would have never bested Mechagodzilla without Godzilla powering up that cool axe of his. Yeah, it’s a whole thing and quite awesome.

Mechagodzilla always proved a formidable rogue in the Toho series. He’s easily beaten the ever-living crap out of the King of the Monsters anytime the two ever faced off. And Legendary’s MechaG is armed to the gills with weapons of mass destruction. He’s a great introduction to the series even if Kiryu (Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla) is my favorite MechaG unit.

Plot

Since Godzilla is played up as the villain from the start it becomes a mystery race for Team Godzilla to discover why he’s attacking seemingly innocent people. Turns out Apex complexes are provoking him and Godzilla destroys each facility only because he believes a rival Titan is challenging him from each one. And he’s right considering it’s Mechagodzilla’s disassembled body parts behind it all. A single eyeball (seriously, his eyeball) emits a signal that just pisses Godzilla right off. Does he sense Ghidorah’s presence in the pulse? I really want to know more about this thing. Because the eyeball (hidden deep in an Apex factory) seems to act like the Orca did in GKOTM.

Kong’s journey is an adventure tale leading him from the borders of an artificial Skull Island and deep into the heart of the Hollow Earth. Whereas Godzilla’s story plays out as a conspiracy/mystery journey Kong’s story is played up as the hero’s quest to find a kingdom. And we spend a lot of time with Kong. And some of my favorite parts of the film were exploring the Hollow Earth! It was a beautiful place of fantasy and awe. I wanted to spend way more time there exploring all it had to show us. It’s said to be the birthplace of all Titans so who knows what other familiar faces are waiting down there and will appear in future movies?

And that’s where I do criticize the movie. I went to see this thing in IMAX – the first time I’d been back to a theater since seeing Joker. And after GVK was over I knew I could have (easily) sat an extra 40 mins just to get more details on, well, everything!

Criticism (of Human Characters)

Yeah, we gotta get into this territory.

With the previous three films, we were given plenty of ‘oh that’s cool’ explanations and things flowed fluidly as we followed people trying to figure out who the Titans were and why things were happening the way they were. I think Kong: Skull Island and GKOTM both did this the best. The human characters weren’t that boring and we clearly understood their motives and why they were reacting the way they did to the Titans.

Not saying GVK doesn’t do that. There is clearly a human villain and his motivations are evident. He wants mankind to be the apex ruler of the world again and will prove his place on top of the food chain by creating Mechagodzilla.

Not to get too into it (but you know I am) but how in the Hell does Apex manage to build an entire Mechagodzilla? Way back in 2014 I remember thinking ‘Wow! Imagine what Mechagodzilla would be like in this world.’ But the thought soon passed because I realized that realistically no one could afford to build that damn thing.

In this case we have the stereotypical business tycoon (Walter Simmons) played by Demián Bichir who just happens to have tunnels running through the earth to serve as his own personal transport. This way he can move his evil robot parts around and other fun black market stuff without anyone noticing. But holy shit how rich is this guy?

Unlike every other movie come before this one the military and government push to control the Titans are all missing. It could easily have been explained that world authorities had pumped all their resources together and given the military the go ahead with preparation for a man-made Titan combatant. That could have been Mechagodzilla’s origin and wouldn’t have taken much to set up. But no, rich guy built him.

The scene that stands out to me though was when Team Godzilla happens upon Ghidorah’s skull. It’s just there because of reasons. We get a quick rambling explanation that it’s fueling MechaG and Ghidorah used telepathy to communicate between his three heads, so this thing can talk to the mecha(?). But I would have liked a little more time knowing how did this thing get into Apex’s hands. I mean I know they must have bought it, but the last time we saw this skull was when Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) bought it off the black market in GKOTM’s post credits.

And holy shit did I miss Jonah. Like what happened to him? He was such a great(!) bad guy, definitely in my top 5 favorite Godzilla human baddies, and his absence is heavily felt here. It would have been cool to know that Jonah was the evil mastermind manipulating the CEO of Apex. I’d have liked to know that smarmy businessman who thought he had all the Aces up his sleeve was nothing more than a witless puppet in Jonah’s hands. And perhaps Mechagodzilla was simply a little test for a much bigger horror Jonah had in mind. Oh well.

Most of the Monarch team was missed here too. But no one was more missed than Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) who died in the previous film. But in GKOTM it looked like Dr. Chen (Ziyi Zhange) was going to be taking his place as the voice of reasonable exposition. In GKOTM she was already explaining Titan myths and lore from across history. In GVK it would have been nice to have her give us a little insight into this ancient rivalry between Kong and Godzilla’s species. That rivalry is just a thing that’s mentioned and never goes anywhere else in the film.

Again to use GKOTM as example, we’re told that Ghidorah is a species come from outer space and that he and Godzilla fought once before. The return of Ghidorah from his icy prison threatened the world as it had in ancient times when he and Godzilla fought once before. So the hatred they both had for one another was clear and understandable. Same way with Kong’s hatred fro the Skull Crawlers in KSI.

In Kong: Skull Island we had an established character (Hank Marlow played by John C. Reilly) in place to explain to us the long feud Kong’s family had with the treacherous Skull Crawlers. They killed Kong’s parents and made it very personal, and they also nearly wiped out the Iwi people. Kong had to fight these beasts to the death to protect all life on Skull Island but everyone feared the day when the Big One came up.

In the case of both films, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, both Kong and Godzilla are given villains to battle and there’s a lot of personal trauma caused on both characters by their arch villains. It created tension and excitement when they had to face them. Not to mention whereas Godzilla had Alan Jonah as a master-class baddie Kong had to fight none other than mother-fuckin’ Samuel L. Jackson! Both of these human baddies brought sinister drama to the monsters and it’s brilliant.

In GVK we have conspiracy theorist Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry) who is running with Team Godzilla and spouting off random bits here and there. I loved this guy – actor not character – in Child’s Play, and I really liked the character at the beginning of GVK but towards the end of the movie I really wished he would just shut up. He quickly became the stereotypical conspiracy theorist nut-job who couldn’t stop talking about the Illuminati and lizard people.

I know I’m bitching a whole lot but this is the first Monsterverse film where the human cast did really bug me. They simply felt one-dimensional when in past films they had depth and a purpose that was immensely relatable in one way or another. And they weren’t forcing comedy on us. When the comedy happened in past films it felt natural.

The one new character who carried her role perfectly was little Kaylee Hottle who plays the lone survivor of the Iwi culture. Her connection with a giant digital ape is so believable and precious. Kong acts as her guardian angel and she’s his voice to humanity. Really she stole every scene she’s in.

Do the monster battles make up for all this though? Oh hell yes! And my petty criticism can’t change how exciting and impactful the monsters are. And that’s why we go see these movies after all. Once the movie ended I could have easily sat there and watched a movie just about Godzilla and Kong without any human characters.

And that’s the bottom line. If you gotta have human characters at least take the time to make them interesting and give them depth.

Speaking of that I know there was talk about making a movie that went back in time and showed Godzilla and Ghidorah’s first battle. I’d be cool with that. And I’d also be cool with a movie focusing on the ancient rivalry between Kong and Godzilla’s species. I don’t care if there are no people in either film. Just let me see monsters fighting!

Overall I do love this movie even with my opinions about it. Doesn’t mean it’s bad. It also makes me hope there’s an uncut version of the film out there. At times it feels like scenes are just cut short, that, and, there are two characters listed in the cast who do not appear in the film. One being Dr. Ilene Chen (Zhang Ziyi) and that’s interesting! Where was she? Like I said, she was sorely missed. And a character played by Van Martin who is listed as Dr. Chen’s assistant. There has to be more to this movie than we’ve seen.

And now that Kong is established in the Hollow Earth who knows what else we’ll get to see in future films? I know that there’s been talk to remake Destroy All Monsters, a Toho film that took place on Monster Island and featured nearly every kaiju from Toho’s legacy. Could there be plans to set up a Legendary version with similar themes?

That and there were rumors of aliens being involved in future films. And you know what that means: GIGAN!

So far GVK has done well and we can only hope it continues to do so so the studios green light some more of these great monster movies.
