PUBLIC ACCESS CHANNEL 43 IS A VHS AESTHETIC DREAM COME TRUE

These people pretty much had me at VHS transfers.

Channel 43 is an online public access station streaming on Twitch that focuses on horror, science fiction, and all the glorious things we here at Nightmare Nostalgia soak up and live by. The back to the past channel features short form video work from various artists while taking on the format of a television broadcast complete with commercial breaks, bumpers, news stories, PSAs’ and of course, host segments. All of this content has been transferred to VHS, circuit bent, and converted back to digital to create a consistent aesthetic throughout the entire broadcast.

Take a gander at this stunning strip of VHS aesthetic.

Per the press release:

Channel 43’s first showcase offers up an eclectic blend from both traditional filmmakers and conceptual video artists while maintaining a unified viewing experience. With video work by 20 artists from around the world, the project aims to bring a dose of variety to horror and sci-fi as well as expand the scope of what these genres can be.
Creator and director of programming, Sophia Gordon, has been blending analog and digital technology within her own video arts practice for over 7 years. Her first channel, Miller’s Grove Public Access, incorporated the style for a group exhibition in 2019. Since then, it has become a staple within her work as a curator. Working under the name TeleUphoria Media Network, Gordon’s main initiatives are to preserve a safe space for artists of all experience levels and to create more interesting opportunities for video makers. She runs annual open calls for her rotating lineup of channels and encourages a DIY sensibility that is lo-fi friendly.”

JAWS ON THE WATER “DIVE-IN” SCREENING RETURNS THIS SUMMER!

JAWS ON THE WATER “DIVE-IN” SCREENING RETURNS THIS SUMMER!

Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water after a year and half long hiatus. I can hear that malevolent Jaws theme with this post. Can you?

The mega popular event hosted by Alamo Drafthouse and High Beam Events is coming back to Austin, Texas for not one, but multiple screenings starting on July 3rd, 2021! The much anticipated return of the legendary event takes place at Volente Beach on Lake Travis.

With a huge inflatable outdoor screen placed at the water’s edge with intrepid viewers watching the movie, you’ll float in inner tubes, with who-knows-what swimming in the inky depths below. As everyone watches Chief Brody and crew on the hunt for the Great White, you might feel something tug on your toes as scuba divers provide an added thrill to the proceedings.

Per the press release:

There are some pandemic-era changes to the event this year, most notably the organizers were not able to create new collectible inner tubes for the audience to float in, so everyone is encouraged to bring their own tube or inflatable device (but no floating doors, as this isn’t a screening of TITANIC).
Doors to Volente Beach’s water park will open at 5:00pm, allowing for plenty of time for beach play, water slides, food and drink, and anticipation or dread for sundown before the movie commences. Capacity is more limited than in previous years to allow more space for social distancing between attendees. Tickets are expected to go fast, so get your fins, and get ready to welcome back summer!

JAWS ON THE WATER DATES: Saturdays, July 3, 10 & 17

Location:Volente Beach Resort & Waterpark16107 Farm to Market Road 2769#Suite DLeander, TX 78641

Monster Blood is back baby and just in time because Holy Horrorland it’s HOT! Cousins Tyler and Kim Malek, founders of Salt and Straw have teamed up with Scholastic for a monster summer in a collaboration effort infusing tasty treats and, well, the holy grail of sweaty Summer days- ice cream available for a limited time at the shop!

Now through July 1st, 2021, Salt & Straw’s Rad Readers menu will be available in the company’s brick and mortar stores as well as for online order nationwide.

With the launching of R.L. Stine’s Slappyworld series and the newly released “Monster Blood Is Back” earlier this year, the delightful treats shop has concocted a blend of salted Mango ice cream with streaks of citrus-y, shiny green goo with chunks of deep red strawberry bark.

Sounds about on par with what I would expect a Goosebumps flavored ice cream to go with!

In addition to the nostalgic nature of Goosebumps, Salt and Straw has also unleashed these limited flavors in conjunction with other famed Scholastic books to their menu:

Geronimo Stilton & The Frosted Frozen Feast (Author: Geronimo Stilton)
Smile: Words & Pictures (Author: Raina Telgemeier)
Amulet: Fruit of the Gadoba Tree (Author: Kazu Kibuishi)
Twins: A Matching Pear w/ Twinnamon Swirl (Author: Varian Johnson & Shannon Wright)
